Kentucky Board of Education is responsible for the development of K-12 schools in each district. Presently, there are more than 670,000 students enrolled in over 1400 schools in Kentucky. With education reforms in 1990, the state’s system of public education has been a role model for the entire nation. The percentage of drop outs from high schools has gone down from 5.06% to 3.49% since 1993 while the number of ACT test takers has grown from 24,942 in 1990 to 29,786 in 2006.
Another figure which will make the citizens of Kentucky smile is the percentage of 4th-graders scoring at proficient or above is higher than the national average according to NAEP in 2005.
